Man Receives Suspended Sentence in Assault Outside Conor McGregor’s Pub
Dublin, Ireland – A 41-year-old man, John Griffiths, has received a 15-month suspended sentence for assault with intent to cause bodily harm, following an “unprovoked” and “ferocious assault” outside Conor McGregor’s pub, the Black Forge Inn, in Dublin. The incident occurred on September 4th, 2021.
Details of the Assault and Sentencing
Griffiths, who resides in the US but has an address at Iveagh Trust, Kevin Street, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Martina Baxter described the assault as “ferocious” and suspended the 15-month sentence in its entirety, citing a token of remorse offered by Griffiths – a sum of €5,000 accepted by the injured party.
The Incident
According to Garda Claire Young’s testimony, authorities were alerted to the assault while on mobile patrol near the Black Forge Inn around midnight. The victim, who was on a work night out and had limited interaction with anyone outside his group, sustained significant facial injuries, including a bleeding nose, red marks, a laceration to his lip, and swelling to his right eye. His clothing was covered in blood.
CCTV Evidence
CCTV footage presented in court showed the victim being assaulted by two men, with the attack continuing even after he was knocked to the ground and rendered unconscious.
Defense Arguments
Defense counsel Keith Spencer BL highlighted Griffiths’ tragic personal circumstances, noting the loss of his brother to suicide in 2021 and his subsequent reliance on alcohol. Spencer likewise stated that Griffiths, a former window-washing business owner, is currently seeking employment and provides financial support to his daughter and two grandchildren in California. Griffiths holds a green card, and a conviction could have had “devastating” consequences.
Judge’s Decision
While Judge Baxter considered deferring the sentence, she ultimately determined it was not appropriate in this case. She opted for a fully suspended 15-month sentence, deeming probation supervision unsuitable given Griffiths’ residence outside of Ireland.
Recent Incidents at the Black Forge Inn
The Black Forge Inn, purchased by Conor McGregor in 2020, has been the target of criminal activity in recent years. In July 2025, the pub was set on fire, an incident Gardaí are investigating as criminal damage. Gardaí believe the fire was malicious. Prior to that, in 2022, the pub was targeted in a suspected petrol bomb attack, though the device failed to ignite. A man was arrested in connection with the July 2025 fire.
Previous Assault Case
In a separate incident in March 2026, a man was sentenced for a “ferocious assault” outside the Black Forge Inn.
