Man Charged After Sexual Assault in Derry

A 32-year-old man has been charged in connection with a sexual assault in Derry that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police were called to Lecky Road in Derry around 1.15am on Sunday following reports of a serious assault. A woman in her fifties was approached, dragged into an alleyway and sexually assaulted. During the attack, the victim sustained serious facial and other injuries, requiring hospital treatment. She remains extremely distressed following the incident.

Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest and Charges

Officers swiftly arrested a 32-year-old man hours after the assault. He has since been charged with sexual assault by penetration and grievous bodily harm.

Court Appearance Scheduled for Tuesday

The accused is due to appear at Derry Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Police had previously appealed for witnesses who were in the area of Lecky Road between 1.15am and 1.35am on Sunday to come forward with any information that could assist with their investigation.
