St. Ultan’s Historical Society Releases Enhanced Allenstown “Craig” Waller Estate Map
The St. Ultan’s Historical Society is concluding a two-year project with the official release of an enhanced Allenstown “Craig” Waller Estate Map, dating back to circa 1836. This captivating piece of local history will be available for purchase on Saturday, November 9th, from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM at Bohermeen Community Centre.
This reproduction of the historic map has been made possible through the dedicated efforts of the ANU design team. Due to the limited number of copies available, they will be sold at €20 each or 3 for €50. The maps, reproduced at A2 size, will be presented in a protective postal tube.
The map holds significant historical value as it features the old, commonly used names of the fields, reflecting a time when the landscape of Allenstown looked quite different. By showcasing these “Field Names,” the map bridges the past and present, offering a fascinating glimpse into the early agricultural practices of the region.
In the past, nearly every field in Ireland had a unique name. On large estates like Allenstown, these names were often used to direct workers to their daily tasks. In 2013, the Meath Field Names Project published a book dedicated to documenting the field names of Meath, further highlighting their historical importance.
Advance orders can be placed by texting 086 0792580, and pick-up arrangements can be made for November 9th between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM.
