Tropical Storm Marce Heads Towards Northern Luzon, Potentially Affecting Areas Hit by Recent Cyclones
MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Marce (international name Yinxing) is projected to impact areas recently affected by Tropical Cyclones Kristine (Trami) and Leon (Kong-rey), according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
“Marce’s track falls directly in the path traversed by Kristine and Leon. Residents in areas previously impacted by these cyclones should be prepared, as Marce is likely to affect those same regions,” stated PAGASA meteorologist Veronica Torres during a briefing.
As of 10 a.m. Monday, Marce was located 775 km. east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, moving west-northwest at 35 km. per hour. PAGASA forecasts Marce to make landfall near the Babuyan Islands or mainland northern Cagayan by Thursday night or Friday.
“As Marce approaches, PAGASA anticipates issuing storm signals and rainfall advisories in the coming days. People in Northern and Central Luzon should connect with their local disaster risk reduction units,” advised PAGASA forecaster Chris Perez during the same briefing.
According to Torres, Northern Luzon, particularly extreme Northern Luzon, and Central Luzon are most likely to experience storm signals and heavy rainfall based on Marce’s projected path.
Currently, Marce carries maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near its center and gusts reaching up to 90 kph. It is expected to intensify and reach typhoon category by Wednesday.
Torres mentioned that the trough of Marce is already affecting extreme Northern Luzon and the eastern section of Luzon. These areas may encounter moderate to heavy, even torrential, rains beginning Tuesday.
While no gale warning is currently in effect, Torres urged small motorbancas to avoid venturing along the seaboards of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur due to rough seas. (PNA)
