Philippines Declares Day of National Mourning After Severe Tropical Storm Kristine

Deep sorrow has gripped the Philippines following the devastating impact of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami). President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared Monday, November 4, 2024, as a National Day of Mourning to commemorate the lives lost and to offer condolences to the bereaved families.

In Proclamation No. 728, issued by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on behalf of President Marcos, the nation is called upon to unite in mourning and to offer prayers for the souls of the victims. This solemn day of remembrance recognizes the profound impact of the storm’s relentless heavy rains, flooding, and strong winds.

President Marcos emphasized the significance of standing in solidarity with those who have suffered immense loss. He urged the entire nation to participate in this dedicated moment of reflection.

As a visible sign of respect and remembrance, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all government buildings and installations throughout the Philippines and abroad on November 4th.

The devastation wrought by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine continues to unfold. According to the latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as of 8 a.m., November 2nd, the storm has tragically claimed 146 lives, with 91 injuries and 19 individuals reported missing. A staggering 2,179,856 families, comprising 8,534,215 individuals, have been affected by the weather disturbance.
