Mark DeRosa Leads Team USA to World Baseball Classic Final
Team USA is one win away from capturing its second World Baseball Classic title, largely thanks to the strategic leadership of manager Mark DeRosa. After facing early criticism, DeRosa has garnered praise for his pivotal decisions in the tournament, particularly during the 2-1 semifinal victory over the Dominican Republic.
From Criticism to Commendation
Mark DeRosa faced scrutiny earlier in the tournament, but recent successes have shifted the narrative. Alex Rodriguez, speaking on FS1 following the semifinal win, highlighted DeRosa’s brilliance, specifically citing his handling of the lineup and pitching changes. Rodriguez stated DeRosa was the biggest reason why Team USA is playing in the final.
Key Strategic Decisions
DeRosa’s decision to start Gunnar Henderson against Dominican Republic pitcher Luis Severino proved particularly effective. Henderson, who had a strong track record against Severino (7 for 9 with a home run, double, and four RBIs prior to Sunday’s game), delivered a crucial home run to tie the game in the fourth inning. DeRosa explained the move as simply “playing the hot hand.” Henderson finished the game 5 for 10 with a home run in the four games he played.
Pitching Management
Another key moment came in the bottom of the fifth inning when DeRosa replaced starting pitcher Paul Skenes after 71 pitches, with runners on first, and second. He brought in sidearm reliever Tyler Rogers, who induced an inning-ending double play from Juan Soto. This move prevented a potential rally and maintained Team USA’s lead.
Bullpen Success
DeRosa’s bullpen management throughout the remainder of the game was also lauded. Griffin Jax, David Bednar, Garrett Whitlock, and Mason Miller combined to shut down the Dominican Republic offense, allowing only three baserunners in the final four innings.
Looking Ahead
Team USA will face either Italy or Venezuela in the final. Nolan McLean is expected to start on the mound for the United States.
Mark DeRosa’s WBC History

He is the first skipper to lead a squad for a second time in the World Baseball Classic. DeRosa also played for Team USA in 2009, recording six hits in 19 at-bats.
