Mathieu Boogaerts: A Singular Voice in French Song
Mathieu Boogaerts, born November 30, 1970, in Fontenay-sous-Bois, France, is a celebrated French singer-songwriter known for his tender, flexible, and discreet approach to music. His career, spanning since 1995, has seen him explore various musical avenues, both independently and alongside Matthieu Chedid.
Early Life and Influences
Boogaerts spent his childhood and adolescence in Nogent-sur-Marne, a suburb of Paris. His parents, a pharmacist mother and an antique dealer father, fostered his early musical development. His father introduced him to artists like Bob Marley and Dick Annegarn, shaping his musical tastes. He began playing music early, initially with an organ gifted to his mother, and later took up the drums at age twelve. By thirteen, he formed his first band, Made in Cament, and self-taught multiple instruments. At sixteen, he met Matthieu Chedid, with whom he formed the group Tam-Tam.
Musical Career
Boogaerts began writing songs and creating demos, even directing a music video for his song “Ondulé” with Émilie Chedid. These demos led to a record deal with Remark Records, a subsidiary of Polygram. His debut album, Super, was released in 1996, partially recorded in his parents’ basement.
Recent Perform and Recognition
In 2025, Boogaerts released his ninth album, Grand Piano, four years after his previous English-language album. Grand Piano is characterized by its orchestral softness although maintaining the delicate simplicity that defines his work. The album features themes of reflection and the passage of time, exploring ideas in songs like “Faut pas que j’oublie” and “Mélancolie,” and navigating the complexities of relationships in “Dans une case.”
Collaborations and Performances
Boogaerts has consistently pursued a unique musical path, whether performing solo, with a band, or in collaboration with Matthieu Chedid. He performed at La Ferme du Biéreau on March 20, 2026.
