Measles Exposure in Colorado: Broomfield High School and Multiple Locations
Colorado public health officials are investigating a case of measles in a Broomfield County resident, leading to potential exposure alerts at several locations, including Broomfield High School. The case, involving a child who was not vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), raises concerns about potential undetected spread within the community.
Recent Measles Case and Exposure Locations
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), along with Broomfield Public Health and Environment, and Boulder County Public Health, confirmed the case on February 27, 2026. The infected child has no known connection to recent measles exposures reported in Colorado and has not traveled outside the state, suggesting the possibility of unidentified cases circulating in the area. Symptoms and Prevention
Measles is a highly contagious disease that begins with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A rash typically follows, starting on the face and spreading throughout the body. The best way to protect against measles is vaccination with the MMR vaccine.
If you have not received the MMR vaccine, you can still receive it within 72 hours of exposure to potentially prevent illness. In some cases, immunoglobulin given within six days of exposure may also be helpful.
What to Do If You Were Exposed
If you were at any of the listed locations during the specified times, monitor yourself for symptoms for 21 days. If symptoms develop, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider, urgent care, or emergency department before going in, and inform them of potential measles exposure to help prevent further spread.
Monitoring for symptoms is especially important for individuals who have not been vaccinated, particularly infants under one year of age.
Measles Cases in Colorado and the U.S.
This is the second case of measles in a Colorado resident in 2026. The first case involved an unvaccinated child who was out-of-state during the infectious period, posing no risk of local transmission. However, Colorado recorded 36 measles cases in 2025, the highest total in decades, as the disease has resurged nationally. As of February 2026, nearly 1,000 measles cases have been reported nationwide, putting the country on track to exceed the 2,281 cases reported in 2025. CDPHE
Outbreaks are currently concentrated in states like South Carolina, Florida, Utah, Arizona, California, and North Carolina.
