Mercedes-Benz S-Class Receives Significant Update with New Tech and Powertrains
For decades, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has represented the pinnacle of automotive luxury, and innovation. The latest iteration of the “esko,” as it’s known, builds upon a 140-year legacy that began with the first Benz car in 1886. A recent preview in Prague highlighted that this is more than just a cosmetic refresh, with over 50% of the vehicle’s components being new or significantly revised – totaling approximately 2,700 parts.
Exterior and Design Enhancements
Even as the overall silhouette remains familiar, the updated S-Class features a subtly larger front grille (approximately 20% larger) and redesigned lighting technology. The new Digital Light system incorporates a design motif of two shining stars, echoed in the rear light clusters. A first for the S-Class, an illuminated standing star on the hood is now available as an option, though its availability may vary depending on market regulations and demand, particularly in the US and China.
Interior Refinements and Technology
The interior continues to emphasize bespoke luxury, with the Manufaktur options allowing for extensive customization. Customers can choose from over 150 exterior paint colors and 400 interior shades. The centerpiece of the cabin is the fourth-generation infotainment system, powered by three artificial intelligences for improved responsiveness and functionality. Enhanced voice control and wireless updates are also included, alongside the ability to download over 40 third-party applications, reducing the need to mirror a smartphone.
The MBUX Superscreen, spanning the entire dashboard, now resides under a single glass surface. It comprises a 14.4-inch central screen and a 12.3-inch display for the front passenger, complemented by a similarly sized instrument panel for the driver and a head-up display. A liquid-cooled supercomputer, along with 10 cameras, 5 radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, manage the advanced driver-assistance systems, including automatic parking.
Rear-Seat Comfort and Entertainment
The S-Class excels in rear passenger comfort, available in standard and extended (L) wheelbase configurations. Rear occupants benefit from 13.1-inch displays, HD cameras for video conferencing, streaming applications, a Burmester 3D premium (or 4D + Dolby Atmos) audio system, and removable MBUX remote controls.
Powertrain Options
The updated S-Class offers a range of electrified petrol and diesel engines with 48V assistance. Diesel six-cylinder engines now feature an electrically heated catalyst for improved emissions control. Petrol engines are paired with a new 4.0-liter V8 (537 hp, 750 Nm) offering refined performance and efficiency. Plug-in hybrid variants provide an electric range of around 100 kilometers.
Chassis and Handling
Air suspension is standard, with the optional E-Active Body Control system providing even more sophisticated damping. The intelligent damping system proactively adjusts shock absorbers, and rear-axle steering (4.5 degrees standard, up to 10 degrees optional) enhances maneuverability, reducing the turning radius of the extended wheelbase version by almost two meters.
Pricing and Availability
As of early March 2026, Czech pricing for the new S-Class starts at 3,139,950 CZK for the 350d 4Matic diesel, 3,333,550 CZK for the S 450 4Matic petrol, and 3,732,850 CZK for the V8-powered model. The plug-in hybrid S 580 e 4Matic EQ is priced from 3,817,550 CZK. The extended wheelbase adds 78,650 CZK to the price. The first deliveries are expected within 2026.
