Weekend Wind Warning Prompts Weather Watch in Ireland and UK

A status yellow wind warning for counties in Ireland’s west and northwest is in effect, urging prepared for strong winds and potentially disruptive conditions.

Windy Weekend Forecast for Ireland

Met Éireann has issued the warning for Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal, starting at 3 am on Saturday and lasting until 6 pm on Sunday. Strong westerly winds with large coastal waves are expected, potentially causing wave overtopping, travel difficulties, and fallen trees.

This comes on the heels of Storm Darragh last week, which significantly impacted these counties with power outages lasting for days.

UK Met Office Issues Yellow Wind Warning

Across the Irish Sea, the UK Met Office has issued a similar yellow wind warning for Northern Ireland counties: Antrim, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry. The warning, in place from 7 am Saturday until midnight on Sunday, anticipates potential transport disruptions due to strong winds.

Weekend Temperatures & Christmas Outlook

Saturday night is expected to be cold in Northern Ireland, with rain, sleet, or snow possible on higher ground. Temperatures could drop as low as 2 degrees in affected areas.

While windy conditions will persist across Ireland over the weekend, milder temperatures are predicted from Sunday night onward. Meteorologists confidently state there’s no chance of a white Christmas.

Christmas Day looks set to be exceptionally mild, with temperatures expected to reach 12 degrees, a remarkable seven degrees above normal for this time of year.
