Michigan Basketball Remains No. 1 After Dominating Purdue, Eyes Duke Challenge

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Michigan men’s basketball team solidified its position as the No. 1 team in the nation with a decisive 91-80 road victory over No. 7 Purdue on Tuesday night. The win marked the Wolverines’ 25th of the season against just one loss, and their first as the AP No. 1 team.

Michigan’s performance at Mackey Arena was a stark contrast to their previous visit on January 24, 2025, where they suffered a 91-64 defeat. This year, the Wolverines took control early, building a 20-point lead and maintaining momentum throughout the game.

A Season of Dominance

The Wolverines have been a force to be reckoned with this season, winning 20 games by double digits, with 13 victories by at least 20 points, 10 by 30, and seven by 40. They boast a 5-0 record against ranked opponents, including victories over Michigan State and Nebraska.

“You can be preseason No. 1 in the country, that means nothing,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “But when you’re in the middle of February and you’re No. 1 in the country, that means a whole lot as you earned that one.”

Balanced Attack and Defensive Strength

Michigan showcased a balanced offensive attack with six players scoring in double figures. Elliot Cadeau led the team with 17 points, while Aday Mara contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolverines’ offense was efficient, with 24 of 30 field goals assisted.

Defensively, Michigan held Purdue to 39% shooting, with 6-foot-9 forwards Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. Playing key roles in disrupting the Boilermakers’ offense. “This is the most unselfish team in America in my opinion,” Lendeborg stated.

Looking Ahead: Duke and the Big Ten

Michigan’s schedule doesn’t ease up as they prepare to face No. 3 Duke on Saturday in Washington, D.C., followed by a matchup against No. 10 Illinois the following week. Coach Dusty May emphasized the importance of staying focused despite the No. 1 ranking.

“This is great for our fans, it’s great for recruiting, it’s great for the attention it puts on our program. But as far as do we care? Absolutely not,” May said. “April 7, if we’re No. 1 that’s what we’re ultimately concerned with.”

Michigan currently holds a 2.5-game lead in the Big Ten standings and a 3.5-game lead over Purdue. Painter acknowledged the Wolverines’ strong position, stating, “These dudes ain’t losing four games. We’ve got four losses. They ain’t losing four games.”
