Farmington United and Hartland Lead the Charge into the Michigan Gymnastics State Finals
Milford, MI – The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Gymnastics State Finals are set to take place this weekend at Milford, with the team competition commencing on Friday and individual championships decided on Saturday. Metro Detroit teams, particularly Farmington United and Hartland, are poised to be major contenders.
Farmington United Eyes Continued Success
Farmington United enters the competition fresh off a regional championship victory, achieving a team score of 143.500. The team has qualified four seniors for all-around individual competitions at the state final. Mikayla Dicks has been a standout performer, recording 9.625 on bars and 9.55 on vault – the highest marks in Region 4. She as well achieved the second-best floor routine, contributing to an all-around score of 36.9.
“She had a good meet,” coach Jeff Dwyer said. “She had one tough event, but she’s still that strong that she finished second.”
Aubrey Woodman also impressed, posting the best vault score in Division 2 and finishing in the top five on the other three events, earning her first all-around with a 35.7. Vanessa Iacoban and Ayla Hougard rounded out the team’s all-around qualifiers, finishing third and fourth, respectively, in Division 2.
With a roster of experienced gymnasts, Farmington United is aiming for its fourth consecutive top-three finish at the state final. Dwyer stated, “Once you get to states, you just get to go all out and see what happens. So that’s the game plan.”
Hartland Looks to Defend its Title
Defending champion Hartland continued its dominance, securing its fourth consecutive regional title by dominating Region 2 with a score of 147.750. The team’s success is built around a strong trio of all-around performers: seniors Alexis Fundich and Kate Gostlin, and junior Olivia Flatt.
Fundich led the way, achieving the best score on bars and floor, and taking first place with an all-around score of 37.95.
Hodge Secures Back-to-Back All-Around Titles
Farmington United senior Leah Hodge recently became the first gymnast to win back-to-back Division 1 Finals all-around titles since Christina Shabet of Troy in 2013-14. Hodge scored 38.325 to win the title, after scoring 38.175 in the team competition.
Hodge won bars (9.65), took second on vault (9.675), third on beam (9.625) and fourth on floor (9.375) to win all-around.
Hartland’s Alexis Fundich also had a strong showing, winning floor (9.75) while teammates Kate Gostlin captured the vault (9.725) and Abby Griffen the beam (9.825).
