Southern California is grappling with devastating wildfires, and actor Milo Ventimiglia is among those who have lost their homes in the inferno.
Ventimiglia Opens Up About the Loss
After evacuating with his family on Tuesday, the three-time Emmy nominee spoke to CBS Evening News about the emotional toll of losing their Malibu home. “You start thinking about all the memories in the different parts of the house and whatnot,” he shared, choking up as he surveyed the damage. “Then you see your neighbors’ houses and everything around, and your heart just breaks.”
Ventimiglia revealed that he and his wife, Jarah Mariano, watched in horror as their home was consumed by flames on security cameras. “I think there’s a kind of shock moment where you’re going, ‘Oh, this is real, and this is happening,'” he explained. “And then at a certain point, we just turned it off. What good is it to continue watching?”
A Baby on the Way, a Family Devastated
Adding to the tragedy, Ventimiglia disclosed that the couple’s crib, along with other cherished belongings, were lost in the fire. They are expecting their first child soon. “We’ve got good friends, and we’ve got good people we’re working with,” Ventimiglia said. “We’ll make do. Wife and baby and dog are most important.”
Life Imitating Art
Speaking on the emotional irony, Ventimiglia recalled his character Jack Pearson on the hit show This Is Us, who perished in a house fire while saving his family. “It’s not lost on me, life imitating art,” he acknowledged.
The Widespread Impact of Southern California Fires
Ventimiglia’s ordeal reflects the devastation felt across Southern California. Currently, those fires have tragically resulted in at least six deaths, forced nearly 180,000 evacuations, and plunged 1.5 million homes into darkness.
President Biden, who extended his Los Angeles trip to visit affected areas, declared the fires a major disaster, offering support to the communities in crisis. “To the residents of Southern California: We are with you.”
