Mexican authorities have announced that five of the ten missing workers of a Canadian mining company have been identified among ten remains found in secret burials in the state of Sinaloa last week.

The prosecutor’s office stated that the identification of the remaining remains is still ongoing.

Vancouver-based precious metal mining company “Vizsla Silver Corp.” informed that he had received news from the families of several employees that their abducted loved ones had been found dead. However, the company stressed that it is still waiting for official approval from the Mexican authorities. Neither the company nor officials have yet named a possible motive for the crime.

The head of the company, Michael Konert, expressed shock at the tragic outcome, stating that the priority is to find the other missing employees and support the families.

Mexican officials reported the discovery of bodies and remains in the area where the search for the missing was underway. Four people have been detained in connection with the disappearance of the employees. President Claudia Scheinbaum announced that the detainees had pointed the authorities to the burial sites and that the investigation was ongoing.

The region where the tragedy occurred has been a conflict zone for more than a year between rival factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Mines in Mexico have previously become targets of organized crime, as criminals seek to extort money or take over the extraction or trade of valuable raw materials.

The company reported the kidnapping of the employees on January 28.

More than 7,000 people have been reported missing in the state of Sinaloa, and more than 132,000 in all of Mexico, according to official figures.

The governor of the region, Ruben Rocha, said that the search for secret burial sites continues. He also mentioned the recent kidnapping of tourists in Mazatlan, where some of the abductees were found alive, but four are still missing.
