Messi Leads Inter Miami to Thrilling Comeback, Young Players Shine Across MLS
Antagonism, bitterness, chaos, even a dash of desperation. These elements were on full display across Major League Soccer on Matchday 2, with several intense rivalry clashes and a growing urgency to secure results.
Florida Derby Thrills as Messi Fuels Inter Miami Comeback
Nowhere was this more evident than in the Florida Derby, where Inter Miami CF and Orlando City SC delivered an instant classic on Sunday Night Soccer. Lionel Messi, continuing his dominance against Orlando City, scored a second-half brace as Miami reeled off four unanswered goals to snatch a 4-2 victory after Orlando’s strong first-half performance left the home fans jubilant.
Messi has now scored six goals in four games against Orlando City. His late free kick, scored in front of Orlando’s supporters, sealed the comeback win. He celebrated by raising his arms to the Orlando faithful and playfully gesturing towards the Orlando bench.
Red Bulls, Rapids, and RSL Showcase Youth Movement
Beyond the drama in Florida, a surprising trend emerged: teams finding success by embracing young talent. Red Bull Fresh York, Colorado Rapids, and Real Salt Lake all secured victories powered by teenage players.
Red Bull New York, fielding the league’s youngest starting XIs in their wins over Orlando and New England, saw Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti consistently stand out. Matthew Dos Santos, promoted from their MLS NEXT Pro side, as well exceeded expectations.
The Colorado Rapids, after a challenging start, defeated the Portland Timbers 2-0, with 18-year-old center back Lucas Herrington scoring his first MLS goal and demonstrating impressive defensive work.
Real Salt Lake, facing the Seattle Sounders, fielded three teenagers in their starting XI and emerged victorious. Aiden Hezarkhani, 18, scored his first career goal, assisted by fellow homegrown players Zavier Gozo and Luca Moisa. Gozo then assisted Ariath Piol for the game-winning goal.
Designated Player Debuts Produce Impact
Several Designated Players also made their debuts this weekend. Timo Werner, who arrived in San Jose just days prior, provided the assist that clinched the Earthquakes’ 2-0 victory over Atlanta United. The Quakes are now 2W-0L-0D, tied with LAFC for second in the Supporters’ Shield table.
LAFC also showcased their strength, with Carlos Vela’s movement drawing two red cards from Dynamo defenders and midfielders Mark Delgado and Stephen Eustáquio scoring from long range in a dominant performance.
The LA Galaxy’s new signing, Brazilian forward João Klauss, also made an immediate impact, scoring a brace in their 3-0 win over Charlotte FC and forming a dangerous partnership with Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil.
