Truck driver pleads guilty in fatal Montreal pileup that killed mother and son An Ontario truck driver has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death after causing a pileup that claimed the lives of a mother and her 11-year-old son on a Montreal-area highway. Baljeet Singh, 29, appeared at the Longueuil courthouse Wednesday via videoconference from a detention centre and pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. The collision occurred on the night of July 22, 2022, on Highway 30 near the Saint-Hubert borough of Longueuil. Nancy Lefrançois, 42, and her son Loïc, 11, were killed, while 10 others were injured. Investigators say Singh was suspected of being on his cellphone playing an online game at the time of the collision. The truck collided with a total of seven vehicles after failing to slow down as it approached a construction zone. On the day of the collision, Singh was treated briefly at a hospital for nervous shock before fleeing the country to India and the United States. An arrest warrant was issued in July 2023. Singh was later located and arrested by U.S. Federal agents in California on August 21, 2025. He was charged in September 2025 with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Singh is due back in court on June 4 for sentencing.
