Kyle Odefey: From Film School to the Forefront of AI Video Production

Long before joining Synthesia, a leading artificial intelligence video platform based in London, U.K., Kyle Odefey was a film production student with a passion for storytelling and a fascination with the visual effects of Star Wars. His journey exemplifies how a traditional filmmaking background can thrive in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

Early Passion for Filmmaking

Kyle Odefey’s interest in film began at a young age. He experimented with video editing, created gaming videos for YouTube, and honed his skills by writing screenplays and participating in summer film programs. “I always wanted to tell stories,” he explains. “There’s something exciting about collaborating with people, creating something meaningful and seeing how audiences respond to it.”

Education and Skill Development at Minnesota State Moorhead

Kyle pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Film Production at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM). He credits the program’s practical approach and study abroad opportunities as pivotal to his development. “At MSUM, you get to try everything — editing, directing, producing — and figure out what kind of creative you want to be,” he says. “I left with a massive body of work I was proud of and confident in. That directly helped me secure internships and jobs later on.”

During his time at MSUM, Kyle’s work was recognized with awards for Best Editing and Excellence in Experimental Filmmaking at the South Dakota Film Festival in 2019. He further expanded his horizons by studying abroad at the University of Lincoln in England for one semester, which ultimately led to a master’s degree in cinematography and film/video production in the U.K. After completing his bachelor’s degree.

Launching a Career and Joining Synthesia

Immediately after graduating, Kyle launched his own business, supported by a university grant, working with small companies in England although seeking long-term opportunities. A job offer from Synthesia as a video editor proved to be a turning point.

Synthesia utilizes AI-generated avatars to enable businesses to create training, marketing, and educational videos. While working with AI wasn’t initially part of his career plan, Kyle quickly recognized the potential of combining emerging technology with traditional storytelling techniques.

The Human Element in AI Video Production

“AI is replicating what it sees. It’s not inventing new emotional experiences or understanding meaning the way humans do,” Kyle emphasizes. “Execution, storytelling and emotional connection still belong to people.” As Synthesia’s first in-house video producer, he focuses on telling the human stories behind the technology, developing videos that showcase the company culture, its employees, and the real-world applications of the platform.

One notable achievement was capturing content during a conversation between Synthesia’s founders and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, with less than a day’s notice, for distribution across Synthesia’s platforms.

The Future of Storytelling in an AI-Driven World

Kyle believes that while technology will continue to evolve, the core of storytelling will remain fundamentally human. “Technology will continue to evolve,” he says. “But storytelling is human. And that will always matter.” His career trajectory demonstrates the enduring value of creative skills and the power of adapting to new technologies.
