Tell us about your journey – where did it begin?
“My upbringing was quite diverse! I was initially born in Misawa, Japan, due to my father’s service with the U.S. Army. We than spent some time in Guam during my toddler years before settling in Hamilton, Ohio, near Cincinnati, where I grew up. Currently, I call Mt.Juliet home, having lived here for the past eleven years.”
What does your professional life look like today?
“I’m a Certified Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) instructor and the owner of Lakeside ISR. My focus is on empowering young children with vital water safety skills.”
What about your personal life?
“I’ve been happily married to my husband, Luke, for twelve years, and we’re blessed with three energetic children – all redheads – ages eight, five, and three.”
Could you share your educational background?
“I hold a bachelor’s degree in music education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Later,I pursued a Master’s degree in humanities and ethnomusicology at the university of Chicago. I even began doctoral studies, initially envisioning a career in academia, but ultimately shifted my focus to continue working in the arts, specifically with school-aged children. I also spent a year teaching Pre-K at my children’s school.”
What drew you and your family to Mt.Juliet?
“My husband’s career brought us here. He joined an orthopedic practice in Wilson County after completing his sports medicine fellowship. we were especially attracted to this area because of the abundant opportunities for outdoor activities, especially enjoying the lake, and the desire to avoid harsh northern winters.”
Looking back, what was your very first job?
“it all started with babysitting! I became Red Cross CPR certified at age eleven and began offering my services to local families.”
Your background includes teaching – can you elaborate?
“Yes, I have a strong background in education. I’ve taught preschool, K-12 music and choir, and even served as an adjunct professor for undergraduate college courses.”
How does your habitat play into your work and family life?
“We’re blessed to have a pool in our backyard and live near Old Hickory Lake – a true dream come true! However, this proximity to water also highlights the very real dangers for young children, making ISR lessons, along with othre safety measures, a paramount priority for our family.”
What inspired you to transition into becoming an ISR instructor?
“I realized I could combine my passion for teaching young children with a critical need for drowning prevention. As a mother of three, I witnessed the incredible life-saving skills my older children gained through ISR lessons. Considering that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under five, according to the CDC, I recognized a demand for another qualified ISR instructor in our community. I completed the rigorous training process in the summer of 2023.”
what does the ISR instructor training entail?
“the training is incredibly comprehensive, spanning eight weeks and encompassing a demanding academic curriculum. It covers not only swimming techniques but also child development, behavioral theory, learning principles, anatomy, physiology, and relevant medical information to adapt lessons for children with specific needs. I also completed 80 hours of practical, in-water training with a Senior Master Instructor. Moreover, I maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED through the American Heart Association.”
Can you describe the core of what you teach?
“I teach children between six months and six years old how to self-rescue in the event they find themselves alone in the water. For infants and pre-walkers, this involves learning to roll onto their back, float, breathe, and remain in that position until assistance arrives. For toddlers and older children, I teach them to swim underwater, roll to their back, float and breathe, then flip over and resume swimming – a swim-float-swim sequence they repeat until they can safely exit the water.”
What does a typical ISR lesson look like?
“Lessons are structured as five daily sessions over six weeks, each lasting ten minutes. This differs from conventional weekly lessons because the short, repetitive format rapidly builds muscle memory and reinforces those crucial motor skills. Ten minutes of focused,one-on-one swimming is a meaningful physical exertion for a young child.lessons are always individual, never in a group setting. We also emphasize general water safety, such as always asking permission before entering a pool and learning how to safely climb out.” I offer lessons year-round in Mt. Juliet and Lebanon, at private pools, for a fee of $150 per week.”
Are there any particularly impactful success stories you’d like to share?
“I’ve had several incredibly rewarding experiences. One student successfully used her ISR skills to float and remain safe after accidentally falling into a pool during a family vacation. another toddler was discovered floating in a hot tub, fully clothed, and security footage showed she had been floating for over a minute. Perhaps most memorably, a child on a cruise ship fell off a pier into the ocean and immediately deployed his learned float, saving himself. These moments are incredibly powerful.”
