A Growing Epidemic: From Paris to Provincial Towns
The problem isn’t confined to the capital. Similar reports have surfaced throughout the country. In Paris’s Place de la République, a young woman named Camille experienced a bite on her wrist. Police reports indicate she hadn’t consumed any alcohol or drugs, but noted the presence of a “peculiar” individual lingering near her and her friends. The phenomenon is spreading, with a preliminary report from the Ministry of the Interior documenting 145 reported cases and 12 arrests nationwide as of late June 2024. A meaningful proportion of the victims are minors, amplifying the concern. While Paris remains a hotspot,with 16 confirmed cases,smaller towns are also affected. A Parisian emergency room physician explained, “The window for effective analysis is incredibly narrow.Delays considerably compromise the accuracy of the tests.”
Recent toxicological analysis, conducted over a weekend, revealed the presence of GHB – commonly known as a “date rape” drug – in one victim’s system. GHB induces significant drowsiness and can lead to unconsciousness, making victims vulnerable to further harm.While GHB is a confirmed presence in some cases, the variety of substances potentially used remains a major concern.Witness accounts have offered limited assistance. Police sources report that two suspects – one described as being of “North african type” and the other as “Caucasian” – were identified by a witness, but the identification proved inconclusive.
