Positivus Festival Adapts to Evolving Music Festival Landscape
The Latvian music festival Positivus is undergoing changes, reflecting broader shifts in the music festival industry. Faced with rising costs and evolving audience preferences, the festival will be held as a one-day event this summer, featuring electronic music artist Calvin Harris as a headliner.
A Shift in Format and Location
For many years, Positivus was a multi-day event held on Lucavsala island. Still, organizers have decided to move the festival to Mežaparks stage in Riga and condense it into a single day. This decision comes as the music festival environment adapts to modern economic realities and changing consumer habits.
Industry-Wide Trends
According to Ģirts Majors, director of Positivus, the global trend is moving towards larger artist concerts rather than multi-day festivals. “The world trend is remarkably much that there are more and more like concerts of massive artists, and this, for example, is already very important in the name of the future – to follow things and adapt to them,” Majors stated. He also noted that smaller markets like Latvia need to adapt more quickly due to a smaller potential audience base.
Changing Audience Preferences
Changes in audience behavior are also playing a role. Madara Štramdiere, director of the “Laba daba” festival, observes that people are less interested in multi-day events requiring camping. “People’s habits have changed. It has been felt for a long time, and it is already globally, if we look at foreign festivals, it is very similar. People are less intrigued to attend multi-day events that require staying in tents overnight,” Štramdiere explained.
A Fragmented Market, But Festivals Persist
Despite the challenges, the Latvian festival scene remains active. Music journalist Aiga Leitholde believes that while the market is fragmented with many smaller festivals emerging, this is positive for musical diversity. “Each summer, in fact, more and more new festivals offer themselves. They are perhaps less visited, perhaps not so well known, but still very powerful. Festivals remain a niche form of expression,” Leitholde said. The annual “Summer Sound” festival in Liepāja will also continue this year.
Positivus’s History and Evolution
Since its inception in 2007, Positivus has been a significant event in Baltic culture and entertainment. Originally held in Salacgrīva, the festival moved to Lucavsala in Riga in 2022, with a focus on hip-hop music Nacionālā enciklopēdija. The festival was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As Positivus continues to evolve, it aims to remain a cornerstone of the Baltic music scene, adapting to the changing landscape while maintaining its commitment to providing a vibrant cultural experience.
