Myanmar’s Spring Revolution Alliance Gains Momentum Amidst Ongoing Conflict

The Spring Revolution Alliance (SRA), a coalition of rebel groups in Myanmar, is playing an increasingly significant role in the ongoing conflict against the military junta. Formed in November 2025, the alliance recently held discussions with the National Unity Government (NUG) regarding defense policies, military operations, and political leadership, signaling a deepening collaboration in the resistance movement.

NUG and SRA Collaboration

On Friday, representatives from the National Unity Government (NUG) met with the Spring Revolution Alliance (SRA) to discuss strategies for advancing the revolution. Discussions centered on local defense policies, ongoing military operations, and the broader political landscape. This meeting underscores the growing coordination between the NUG, Myanmar’s shadow government, and the diverse armed groups challenging the junta’s authority.

Military Operations and Resistance Activities

The SRA and affiliated People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) continue to engage in active resistance against the junta. Recent operations include:

  • Magway Region: A Special Operation Force under the NUG attacked an oil refinery and a defense equipment factory in Upper Minhla Township.
  • Sagaing Region: People’s Defence Forces conducted a mine attack on junta troops in Chinpyit Village, Pale Township, resulting in casualties.
  • Bago Region: Forces from Yangon Region are engaged in local battles near Winkan Village, Shwe Kyin Township.
  • Mandalay Region: An attack on a junta patrol car on the Bagan Nyaung-U-Kyaukbadaung Road in Nyaung-U Township resulted in four junta soldiers killed and the confiscation of four weapons.

Humanitarian Concerns and Displacement

The conflict continues to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. In Moenyin, the number of displaced people from Kathar, Sagaing Region, is rising, and monasteries are struggling to accommodate the influx of refugees. Kantalu Gate, previously closed due to attacks, has been reopened, but remains a target, as evidenced by a recent drone attack.

Allegations of Human Rights Abuses

The Political Prisoners’ Network Myanmar reports ongoing sexual exploitation and unlawful killings of both men and women in prisons and interrogation camps. These allegations highlight the brutal tactics employed by the junta and the urgent need for international intervention to protect civilians.

Economic Impact and International Calls for Action

Myanmar’s economy has been significantly impacted by the ongoing conflict, transforming into what Industrial Global Union describes as a “war economy.” The union has called on the European Union to revoke the Everything But Arms (EBA) scheme, which benefits the junta, and for international companies to withdraw from Myanmar responsibly.

SRA Formation and Composition

The Spring Revolution Alliance was conceived in May 2025 by representatives from seven groups seeking to improve command and coordination structures. The alliance expanded to 19 member groups by November 2025. Key members include the Bamar People’s Liberation Army, the Karenni National Defence Force, and various regionally based forces. The SRA’s stated goals include human rights, gender equality, and federalism.

Junta Response and Infrastructure Development

Despite the escalating conflict, the junta continues to pursue infrastructure projects and maintain control over essential services. The military junta announced plans for 24-hour electricity supply to industrial zones, special economic zones, at a rate of 900MMK per unit. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has also claimed efforts to improve internet connectivity nationwide and has highlighted support programs for pregnant women, and children.

Looking Ahead

The Spring Revolution Alliance’s growing influence and collaboration with the NUG represent a significant challenge to the military junta. As the conflict continues, the humanitarian situation is likely to worsen, and the need for international pressure on the junta to restore democracy and protect human rights will turn into increasingly urgent.
