Why Nadiem Makarim Chose chromebooks

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Nadiem makarim, the current Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, is facing questions about the Chromebook procurement process from 2019-2022. He had a specific reason for choosing Chromebooks over Windows laptops at the time.

Nadiem’s lawyer,Hotman Paris Hutapea, explained that the Chromebook management system (Chrome Device Management) costs US $30 per laptop, and this is a one-time fee.

In comparison, the Windows system costs between US $200 and US $300. Hotman stated that this payment needs to be renewed every three years.

“Compared to the cost of device management with Windows, Windows is much more expensive – about US $200 to US $230 every three years,” Hotman explained at a press conference on Monday, September 8, 2025.

“Google only charges US $30 once, for the lifetime of the device,” he added.
