Something Brighter Than the Sun exists, and it’s Confusing NASA

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The sun isn’t the brightest thing in space. There’s an object reportedly 10 million times brighter than our solar system’s center.

NASA calls it a ULX. It truly seems to break the rules of physics, specifically Eddington’s laws. These laws dictate how radiant an object can be based on its size.

According to physics, anything exceeding the Eddington limit should explode. But this ULX hasn’t. That’s what’s puzzling NASA. It just…persisted.

A study in The Astrophysical Journal details observations of the ULX using NASA’s NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Array) telescope. The telescope revealed something unexpected. It isn’t a typical black hole.

Researchers believe it’s a mid-sized black hole. These are harder to find than smaller or supermassive ones. They’ve long been theorized, but proving their existence is tough. This ULX could be a key piece of that puzzle.

“These mid-sized black holes are really hard to find,” said Dr. Matthew Poole, a researcher at the University of Birmingham. “Because they’re smaller, they don’t have as much material falling into them.So they’re less luminous and harder to detect.”

The ULX is located in the galaxy ESO 243-49. It’s about 500 million light-years away from Earth. NuSTAR’s high-energy X-ray vision was crucial for this discovery. It allowed scientists to see through the surrounding gas and dust.

This discovery doesn’t just confirm the existence of mid-sized black holes. It also challenges our understanding of how these objects form and evolve. It’s a reminder that the universe still holds many secrets. We don’t know everything, and that’s exciting.

Scientists will continue studying this ULX. They hope to learn more about its properties and its role in the galaxy. It’s a bright spot – literally – in the search for answers about the cosmos.
