Details of the Incident
The incident occurred while Dye, 22, was streaming on the Whatnot platform. According to reports, Dye mocked Malukas’ voice, using a high-pitched tone and language deemed unacceptable by NASCAR officials . He reportedly mimicked Malukas while recounting a story about a previous encounter.
NASCAR’s Response
NASCAR cited Section 4.3.C of its rule book in issuing the suspension. This section prohibits NASCAR members from making public statements that criticize, ridicule, or disparage another person based on characteristics including, but not limited to, sexual orientation . The sanctioning body stated that Dye “must complete sensitivity training before he may return to competition.”
Kaulig Racing’s Action
Dye’s team, Kaulig Racing, also issued an indefinite suspension, stating they became aware of the comments on social media and took immediate action . Dye drives the No. 10 Ram for Kaulig Racing and is in his first full season in the Truck Series.
Dye’s Apology
Following the backlash, Dye released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) apologizing for his remarks. He acknowledged using “words poorly” and understanding why people were upset . He also stated he has friends in the LGBTQ+ community and did not intend to offend anyone.
Current Standing
Prior to the suspension, Dye was 13th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings. His eligibility to return to competition is contingent upon completing the required sensitivity training.
