National Do Not Call Registries Observe Rising Enrollment as Consumers Fight Unwanted Calls

As of February 2026, national “Do Not Call” registries around the world are experiencing increased enrollment as consumers seek to reduce unwanted telemarketing and sales calls. This trend reflects a growing desire for privacy and control over communication preferences.

United States: National Do Not Call Registry

The United States’ National Do Not Call Registry remains a key resource for consumers. Established to stop unwanted sales calls from legitimate companies that follow the law, the registry is free to join. However, it’s key to understand its limitations. The registry doesn’t block all calls; it won’t stop calls from scammers or organizations like charities, political groups, or debt collectors.

Registration can be completed online at DoNotCall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236). After registering online, users must click a link in a confirmation email within 72 hours to finalize their registration. It can take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop after registration.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) emphasizes that registration is permanent unless a number is disconnected and reassigned, or the registrant requests removal. Consumers can verify their registration status through the same online portal or phone number used for initial registration.

Uruguay: “Do Not Call Me” Registry Gains Momentum

In Uruguay, the national “Do Not Call Me” registry has seen significant growth. As of February 2026, the registry boasts 422,000 registered users, a 57,000 increase compared to the same month in 2025. According to the Communications Services Regulatory Unit (URSEC), the number of users registering monthly continues to rise, driven by a desire to protect privacy and reduce unwanted calls from advertising and telemarketing companies.

The Uruguayan registry allows users to enter their telephone, landline, or mobile number to block commercial calls and SMS messages. Activation can take up to 30 days. In February, 199 companies consulted the registry. Registration is free and can be completed online, by phone, or in person.

Limitations of Do Not Call Registries

While effective against legitimate telemarketers who comply with the law, Do Not Call registries are not a foolproof solution. Scammers often disregard these registries, continuing to make illegal calls. The FTC advises consumers to hang up on unwanted calls and report them to the agency.

Recent Legal Developments

A recent case in Michigan highlights the ongoing challenges of unwanted text messages. Plaintiff Justin Nelson claims to have received multiple promotional texts intended for another recipient, despite his number being registered on the National Do Not Call Registry.

These developments underscore the necessitate for continued vigilance and proactive measures to combat unwanted calls and protect consumer privacy.
