The countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) reached an agreement to extend the mandate of the Secretary General, Jens Stoltenbergand the official announcement would be made in the next week, diplomatic sources told AFP this Thursday.
The mandate of the Norwegian Stoltenberg, who has been at the helm of the transatlantic military alliance since 2014, It has already been extended until October of this year.following the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“Everyone is in the same position. The announcement will be formalized and announced in the next week,” an alliance diplomat told AFP.
Other NATO-accredited diplomats confirmed that the 31 countries of the alliance reached consensus for a new one-year extension in Stoltenberg’s tenure, after months of searching for a candidate for the position.
NATO countries will hold a summit in Lithuania in July and the intention of the alliance was to arrive at that meeting with the question of the mandate already resolved.
