Marcus Urann: From Honor Society Founder to Cranberry Pioneer
Marcus Libby Urann (1873-1963) was a multifaceted figure whose contributions spanned academia, law, agriculture, and entrepreneurship. Best known as “Mr. Cranberry” for his pivotal role in the development of the cranberry industry, Urann also left a lasting legacy as the founder of Phi Kappa Phi, one of the nation’s most prestigious honor societies.
Early Life and Academic Pursuits
Born in October 1873, Urann’s commitment to academic excellence was evident during his time at the University of Maine. As a student, he recognized a need for an honor society that would celebrate scholastic achievement and elevate academic leaders within the university and the state. In 1897, he spearheaded the creation of the Lambada Sigma Eta Society, which would later become Phi Kappa Phi, deriving its name from the Greek words forming its motto: Philosophia Krateito Photo, meaning “Let the love of learning rule humanity.”
Urann’s vision for Phi Kappa Phi was to recognize excellence across all academic disciplines. The University of Maine remains the founding chapter of the organization. A lecture honoring his legacy, “More Than Learners: Students as Makers of the University of Maine,” is regularly held at the university, featuring prominent speakers like University of Maine President Dr. Joan Ferrini-Mundy.
A Pioneer in the Cranberry Industry
Beyond his contributions to higher education, Urann established himself as a leading figure in the cranberry industry. He was a lawyer, a cranberry farmer, and a key founder of the Ocean Spray cooperative. In 1912, he began experimenting with cranberry sauce production in his farm’s packing house, initially serving the Massachusetts market.
Urann founded his own company to produce and market cranberry sauce under the name Ocean Spray. As the cooperative grew, it adopted the Ocean Spray name, and in 1941, canned cranberry sauce was first distributed nationally by the cooperative. He served as president of Ocean Spray from 1930 to 1954. His innovative work led to him being affectionately known as “Mr. Cranberry.”
Legacy and Impact
Marcus Urann’s diverse accomplishments demonstrate a commitment to both academic excellence and entrepreneurial innovation. His founding of Phi Kappa Phi continues to recognize and honor outstanding students, while his pioneering work with Ocean Spray revolutionized the cranberry industry. His nephew, Marcus M. Urann, also became a cranberry executive, continuing the family’s legacy in the field.
