Anti-Asylum Protests in Netherlands Turn Violent in Bleskensgraaf

Protests against plans to open asylum seeker centers in the Netherlands have escalated into violence, with demonstrators clashing with police in the Zuid-Holland town of Bleskensgraaf. The unrest highlights growing tensions surrounding the country’s asylum policies and the government’s efforts to distribute asylum seekers across municipalities.

Escalation of Protests

On Tuesday evening, February 24, 2026, a demonstration against a proposed asylum seeker shelter in Bleskensgraaf turned violent. Protesters, arriving in a procession of approximately 150 cars from Nieuw-Lekkerland, threw rocks and glass at police officers and set off fireworks [NL Times]. Riot police intervened to break up the protest and order demonstrators to leave the area.

The protests occurred while the Molenlanden municipal council was meeting to discuss the opening of an asylum seekers’ center. Demonstrators attempted to force their way into the De Spil conference centre where the meeting was held [DutchNews.nl]. Protesters carried Dutch flags and banners expressing opposition to the shelter.

No Arrests or Injuries Reported

Despite the violence, a police spokesperson confirmed that no arrests were made and no injuries were reported [NL Times]. Although, the incident underscores the intensity of feeling surrounding the issue.

Asylum Distribution Law

The protests are rooted in the Netherlands’ Asylum Distribution Law, which mandates that municipalities accommodate a fair share of asylum seekers. The municipality of Molenlanden is required to house approximately 250 asylum seekers and is currently exploring four potential locations [NL Times]. Similar protests were held two weeks prior in Nieuw-Lekkerland against a different proposed shelter location.

Mayor’s Response

Mayor Theo Segers of Molenlanden briefly interrupted the council meeting to appeal to the protesters to disperse. He too received a petition signed by 10,000 people opposing the asylum seeker center [DutchNews.nl].
