ATHX Games: The Rise of a New Hybrid Fitness Competition
ATHX is rapidly gaining recognition as a premier fitness competition, challenging athletes with a unique blend of strength, endurance, and metabolic conditioning. Launched in 2023, the event has expanded from five UK events to include mainland Europe in 2026, attracting a diverse field of competitors from CrossFit, HYROX, and hybrid fitness backgrounds.
What is ATHX?
ATHX is a continuous 2.5-hour fitness competition structured across six zones, each designed to test a different aspect of physical capability. The competition distinguishes itself by incorporating structured rest periods, allowing athletes to maximize their efforts in each zone. [1]
The ATHX Workout Structure
The competition is divided into three core sections: strength, endurance, and metabolic conditioning (metcon).
Strength Zone
The strength zone consists of three max-effort lifts:
- Strict Overhead Press: Six minutes to achieve a one-rep max (1RM).
- Back Squats: Six minutes to complete a three-rep max.
- Deadlifts: Eight minutes to achieve a five-rep max.
Endurance Zone
Following a 10-minute rest, athletes move to the endurance zone, which involves 22 minutes of continuous running and rowing. Athletes alternate between running and rowing distances of 500m, 750m, or 1km, depending on their division. [1]
Metcon Zone
A 30-minute rest period precedes the metcon, a 25-minute challenge designed for speed. The metcon incorporates exercises such as ski-erg, dumbbell snatches, sandbag carries, box jump-overs, walking lunges, burpee broad jumps, and a final stint on the SkiErg. [1]
What it Takes to Succeed at ATHX
ATHX demands a well-rounded athletic profile. Success requires not only strength but also significant endurance and the ability to recover quickly between demanding physical challenges. Athletes strong in one area may struggle in others, highlighting the importance of balanced training. [1]
ATHX vs. HYROX
While both ATHX and HYROX fall into the hybrid fitness category, they differ in their approach. According to Men’s Health, HYROX primarily focuses on aerobic conditioning with strength stations that are less demanding for experienced strength trainers. ATHX, conversely, incorporates heavier strength training alongside endurance and high-intensity conditioning, making it a more comprehensive test of overall fitness. [1]
Growth and Expansion
Since its launch in 2023, ATHX has experienced steady growth. In 2025, the ATHX Finals were held at the NEC Birmingham, attracting nearly 6,000 finishers from events across the UK and Ireland. [4] The competition is now expanding internationally, with its first events on mainland Europe scheduled for 2026. [1] Adidas has also entered a four-year global partnership with ATHX Games, supporting its international growth. [3]
