New England Weather: Freezing Rain, Fog, and a Warming Trend

New Englanders can expect a mixed bag of weather conditions this weekend, starting with freezing rain and fog, followed by a warming trend into next week. Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend, so remember to set your clocks ahead.

Current Conditions and Weekend Outlook

Cloudy skies will persist over New England through much of the weekend and into Sunday afternoon. Temperatures tonight will remain in the 30s, with wind chills in the 20s due to a northeasterly wind blowing in from the ocean. This wind has stirred up offshore waves, with swells between 3 and 9 feet .

Expect a noisy night near the coast as the offshore wind continues. This similarly pulls more moisture inland, bringing fog and drizzle to many areas. With the cold ground and “milder” air moving overhead, fog is likely to develop between Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Temperatures tonight and Saturday morning will be below freezing in many locations, potentially creating slippery surfaces due to fog or freezing drizzle. Saturday’s high will reach 40 degrees, with limited sunshine. Sunday will be warmer, with highs in the 50s and sunshine expected later in the day. A front will move through the Northeast Saturday night into Sunday, bringing showers, but most outdoor activities should avoid the rain as it clears by mid-morning.

Daylight Saving Time

Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed on Saturday night, as Daylight Saving Time begins.

Warming Trend Next Week

The warming trend continues next week, with temperatures in the 50s to 60s on Monday, and in the 60s to near 70 on Tuesday. Southwest New England could reach the 70s on Wednesday, although a backdoor front could retain coastal areas in the 40s or 50s by midweek .

Temperatures will be high enough to melt the snowpack in southern New England, and birds may begin singing near marshes at night!
