Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Organ Damage, global Health Crisis
ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are harming every major human organ, according to a new report by global experts, as reported by The Autonomous.
these foods – including ready meals, chips, sugary snacks, and breakfast cereals – are connected to poor health outcomes. This includes a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and premature death, the report stated on November 19th.
UPFs are quickly overtaking fresh foods in the diets of both children and adults worldwide. large food corporations are using aggressive marketing to boost sales, distort scientific discussions, and block regulations, a review published in The Lancet medical journal on November 18th explains.
However, the food industry disputes some of the report’s claims, according to Euractiv.
Industry groups like FoodDrinkEurope – representing companies such as Nestlé, Ferrero, and Coca-Cola – call the findings “sensationalism.” They argue the “UPF” label lacks scientific agreement and is “imprecise and confusing.”
The Lancet study, authored by 43 scientists and researchers, asserts that food companies prioritize profits. This leads to UPFs replacing healthier options, lowering diet quality, and contributing to numerous chronic illnesses.
“The main reason for the global increase in UPFs is the growing economic and political power of the UPF industry, and its reshaping of food systems to maximize profits,” the study authors explained.
A review of 104 long-term studies on UPFs revealed that 92 showed increased risks of chronic diseases and earlier death from all causes.
UPFs typically contain high amounts of saturated fat, salt, sugar, and additives. This leaves less room in people’s diets for nutritious foods and encourages overconsumption.
