A New Marine Tyrant: Scientists Uncover the Mosasaur “T. Rex” of the Cretaceous Seas
Scientists have identified a new species of mosasaur, Tylosaurus rex, a formidable marine reptile that ruled the ancient seas during the Cretaceous period. This discovery, detailed in a study published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, reclassifies previously misidentified fossils and sheds light on the evolutionary history of these apex predators.
The Discovery of a “Sea Tyrant”
The newly named species, Tylosaurus rex, lived approximately 80 million years ago and measured up to 43 feet (13 meters) in length—comparable to a tour bus. Its name, meaning “king of the tylosaurs,” reflects its dominance in the marine ecosystem. The fossils, primarily found in northern Texas, were initially misclassified as Tylosaurus proriger, a closely related species.

“Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes the mosasaurs,” said Amelia Zietlow, lead author of the study and a paleontology research associate at the American Museum of Natural History. “Our analysis reveals that T. Rex was not only larger but also possessed uniquely serrated teeth and evidence of intense intra-species combat.”
Evidence of Violent Encounters
Fossils examined in the study, including the Perot Museum’s “Black Knight” specimen, show signs of severe injuries, such as a fractured lower jaw and a missing snout tip. Researchers suspect these wounds resulted from clashes with other T. Rex individuals. Similar evidence was found in the Yale Peabody Museum’s “Sophie” specimen, now reclassified as T. Rex.
“We’ve found evidence of violence within this species to a degree not previously seen in other Tylosaurus specimens,” noted Ron Tykoski, co-author and curator at the Perot Museum. “This suggests a highly competitive social hierarchy among these marine predators.”
Revisiting Mosasaur Evolution
The study also challenges long-standing assumptions about mosasaur evolution. By reanalyzing fossil data, the team proposed a revised evolutionary family tree for tylosaurs, emphasizing the need for updated methodologies in studying these ancient reptiles. The research highlights the importance of re-examining historical collections, as over a dozen fossils previously misidentified as T. Proriger now belong to T. Rex.
“This discovery isn’t just about naming a new species,” Zietlow said. “It underscores the necessity of revisiting outdated datasets and modernizing our approaches to understanding mosasaur evolution.”
Historical Context and Naming Nuances
The name Tylosaurus rex echoes a earlier, informal designation by paleontologist John Thurmond in the 1960s, who referred to large Texas tylosaurs as Tylosaurus thalassotyrannus (“sea tyrant”).
