A Shocking Start to the Tournament
The 2026 All England Open, a Super 1000 event and the oldest badminton tournament in the world, saw early exits for top contenders. Shi Yuqi of China, the previous year’s world number one, was defeated in the first round by Lakshya Sen of India. However, it was Nguyễn Nhật’s victory over Lee Chia Hao of Taiwan that truly captured attention.
Upset Victory Over Lee Chia Hao
Lee Chia Hao, 26 and ranked 21st in the world, entered the tournament as the reigning finalist and a strong favorite. Despite this, Nguyễn Nhật secured a decisive 2-0 victory (21-17, 21-8) against the Taiwanese player. This win represents a rare achievement for Nguyễn Nhật at the Super 1000 level, a tier of competition generally considered beyond his reach.
Previous Successes and Background

He became eligible to represent Ireland at 17 and quickly made a name for himself, winning a gold medal at the U17 European Championships in 2016 and subsequently becoming Irish champion. He initially competed in both men’s singles and doubles before focusing solely on singles at age 20.
