After the departure of Czech coach Michal Ščásny, Spartak Trnava’s sporting director, Martin Škrtel, stepped in as interim manager. This change has been felt by the players, including those previously out of favor, like forward Idjessi Metsoko. Captain Martin Mikovič has indicated a sense of a fresh start, with everyone starting on equal footing.
Following a hard-fought victory against FC Košice in the 15th round of the Nike League, Spartak secured another crucial three points with a 2-0 win over KFC Komárno in the 16th round at the Anton Malatinský Stadium. Post-match, insights were shared regarding the atmosphere within the club following the coaching change.
“It’s hard to talk about any enjoyment, because there are even more nerves on the bench than there were before, when I was in the stands as sporting director. That’s why you can’t talk about any enjoyment, maybe only for those few seconds at the end, when we already knew that we wouldn’t lose the victory. But it was a difficult match. In the cabin, I thanked the players for their attitude, as well as my colleagues who are involved in this. I’m here now, even though I’m sitting in front of you, it’s also a job, weather it’s Pať durkáč or Mário Auxta,” Škrtel acknowledged his assistants adn the wider team supporting Spartak’s operations.
Spartak Trnava captain Martin Mikovič has spoken about the changes within the club following the temporary appointment of Martin Škrtel as head coach, highlighting the renewed opportunities for players previously out of favor. Mikovič praised the work of Škrtel and his coaching team and emphasized a sense of fresh starts within the squad.
Return of Players Previously Suspended
Following the match, Mikovič noted the return to training of players who had previously been suspended, including Idjessi Metsoko. He specifically mentioned the case of Michal Ščásny, who had not featured in a competitive match for nearly six months.
“I already mentioned it after Košice, that those things have not changed much in the training process,” Mikovič stated, referencing the relatively smooth transition following the departure of Michal Ščasný.”But some players got another chance and they will either use it under the coach or not.”
Škrtel’s Approach and Future of Ščasný
Mikovič contrasted the coaching styles of Škrtel and Ščasný, suggesting Škrtel’s approach is more emotionally driven and provides a broader sense of belief in all players.
“We all start over the same. ‘Škrťo’ believes in every player, I’m not saying that the coach (Michal Ščasný) didn’t believe it didn’t look like that, but Škrťo has it based on emotion and things like that. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for him,” Mikovič explained. He added that Škrtel has two more games to prove himself before a final decision is made regarding his long-term position.
