René Redzepi Resigns from Noma Amid Abuse Allegations

René Redzepi, the head chef and co-founder of the internationally acclaimed Copenhagen restaurant Noma, announced his resignation on Wednesday following allegations of physical and psychological abuse against staff. The move comes after protests in Los Angeles ahead of a four-month pop-up residency that began this week.

Allegations Detail Pattern of Abuse

The New York Times detailed allegations of physical and psychological abuse, including claims that Redzepi “punched employees in the face, jabbed them with kitchen implements and slammed them against walls.” The report, based on interviews with 35 former employees, described a “pattern of physical punishment” and “lasting trauma from layers of psychological abuse, including intimidation, body shaming and public ridicule.” Redzepi as well allegedly threatened to blacklist employees from the industry, deport their families, and have family members fired from other jobs .

Redzepi’s Response and Apology

In an Instagram story, Redzepi stated, “I’ve decided to step away and allow our extraordinary leaders to now guide the restaurant into its next chapter.” He acknowledged the recent weeks had “brought attention and important conversations about our restaurant, industry and my past leadership.”

Redzepi continued, “I have worked to be a better leader and Noma has taken big steps to transform the culture over many years. I recognise these changes do not repair the past. An apology is not enough; I take responsibility for my own actions.” He also posted a video apologizing to staff and announcing his departure.

Impact on Noma and Related Ventures

Redzepi’s resignation extends beyond Noma itself. He is also stepping down from the board of Mad, a food industry non-profit he founded in 2011. Prior to the announcement, American Express and Blackbird, a hospitality company, had already cut ties with Noma in anticipation of the Los Angeles pop-up .

LA Residency to Continue

Despite the controversy, Redzepi stated that Noma’s team would “carry forward together into our LA residency, which will be a powerful moment for them to show that they’ve been working toward.” Tickets for the LA residency, priced at $1,500 (€1,299), reportedly sold out in three minutes, according to Eater .

Noma’s Legacy

Noma has consistently been ranked among the world’s best restaurants, repeatedly holding the number one position on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
