A massive power outage plunged much of the Eastern Seaboard into darkness late Thursday, leaving millions without electricity and disrupting transportation, dialog, and essential services. From Maine to Florida, cities and towns are grappling with the widespread disruption, with authorities scrambling to determine the cause and restore power.
The outage began around 6:15 PM EDT, initially affecting areas in New York and New Jersey before rapidly spreading south.Preliminary reports suggest a failure within the PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator responsible for managing the electricity supply in the Mid-Atlantic states, may be to blame.However, officials are hesitant to pinpoint a definitive cause until a thorough investigation is completed.
“We are aware of the widespread outage and are working with our partners to identify the root cause and restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” said PJM spokesperson, Allison Miller, in a statement. “The complexity of the grid makes pinpointing the issue challenging,but our teams are working diligently.”
Major cities like New York, philadelphia, and Washington D.C. have been substantially impacted. The New York City subway system ground to a halt, stranding thousands of commuters. Traffic lights are out across major roadways, leading to gridlock and hazardous conditions. Hospitals are operating on emergency generators, and authorities are urging residents to conserve water and limit non-essential travel.

Halloween Party Investigation Ongoing
police are investigating a large Halloween party held over the weekend that drew hundreds of attendees, many of whom were underage. Chief Wilkins addressed the public during a press conference, stating that witness cooperation varies.
“Some are cooperating and some are not,” Wilkins said. He added that a lack of cooperation is typical in situations involving so many people, and it’s unfortunate.
Wilkins emphasized that a significant number of partygoers were under the legal drinking age.Given the large crowd, he believes the town should have been informed about the event beforehand.
