Former NRL Star Matt Utai Shot in Sydney Drive-By, Son Linked to Crime Family
Former National Rugby League (NRL) player Matt Utai is recovering in hospital after being shot in a drive-by shooting in Greenacre, a suburb in southwest Sydney, on Tuesday morning. The incident has led police to investigate links between Utai’s son, Iziah Utai, and a notorious Sydney crime family, escalating concerns about gang violence in the region.
The Shooting and Utai’s Condition
The 44-year-old Utai was ambushed while walking to his car outside his home around 6:00 AM on Tuesday. Bankstown Police Area Command Superintendent Rodney Hart stated that Utai was conscious and in a “fair amount of pain” upon arrival of emergency services . Police confirmed that Utai has no prior criminal record and is not believed to be involved in criminal activity.
Investigation Focuses on Son’s Alleged Connections
The investigation quickly turned towards Iziah Utai, with police probing his connections to a prominent crime family. According to NSW Police organised crime squad boss Brad Abdy, the shooting appears to be targeted, with the Utai family as the focus of escalating gang conflict . The ABC reports that Iziah Utai is believed to be associated with the Alameddine crime family .
Escalation of Violence and Related Incidents
The shooting of Matt Utai is part of a series of incidents across Sydney’s west over the past 24 hours. Following the shooting, a burnt-out SUV suspected of being used in the attack was found in Wiley Park and seized for forensic examination . Later on Wednesday, shots were fired at a home in St Clair, with a woman in her 50s present but unharmed. A car fire was also reported in a nearby suburb. Police have established a dedicated task force, comprising over 100 investigators, to address the escalating violence .
Underworld Tensions and Threats
Unverified footage circulating on social media appears to show individuals taunting Iziah Utai before the shooting. An underworld-focused media outlet reported that the Alameddine crime family is “at war” with a group known as the Coconut Cartel, and shared a message purportedly from the Alameddine family threatening Iziah Utai and his associates .
