Nvidia CEO: Pentagon-Anthropic Clash ‘Not the Finish of the World’
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has characterized the dispute between the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Anthropic as manageable, stating it is “not the end of the world.” His comments come as the DoD has given Anthropic until Friday to adjust its restrictions on the military’s utilize of its Claude AI tools, or potentially lose its government contract. CNBC reported on Huang’s remarks on Wednesday.
Balancing Interests
Huang emphasized that both the DoD and Anthropic hold reasonable positions in the ongoing negotiations. He explained that the Department of Defense has a legitimate right to utilize technology acquired through procurement in a manner that serves its interests. Conversely, Anthropic, as a private company, has the right to determine how its products are marketed and the specific use cases it supports. “So I feel they both have their reasonable perspective,” Huang said.
Sticking Points in the Negotiation
The core of the disagreement lies in Anthropic’s desire for assurances that its AI models will not be employed for the development of autonomous weapons systems or for mass surveillance of American citizens. According to CNBC, the DoD, however, is seeking unrestricted access for “all lawful use cases.”
Potential Consequences and Alternatives
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has threatened to designate Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” or invoke the Defense Production Act if the company does not comply with the DoD’s demands. Huang acknowledged the potential for these actions but downplayed their significance, noting that Anthropic is not the sole provider of AI technology and the DoD has alternative options.
Nvidia’s Position and Anthropic’s Value
Huang as well highlighted the value of Anthropic’s Claude AI platform, calling it “incredible” and noting its advancements in coding and reasoning capabilities. Yahoo Finance reported that Huang stated Nvidia uses Claude “all over our company.” He encouraged other software companies to explore its potential. Nvidia and Microsoft have pledged to invest up to $15 billion in Anthropic, with the AI safety and research company pursuing a funding round expected to raise over $25 billion at a $350 billion valuation.
Anthropic Responds to Huang’s Comments
Anthropic has pushed back against comments attributed to Huang suggesting the company believes only it can build safe and powerful AI. A company spokesperson told Tom’s Hardware that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has never claimed exclusive capability in AI development. The spokesperson emphasized Amodei’s advocacy for national transparency standards for all AI developers and his concerns regarding the potential economic impact of AI on employment.

Anthropic and Nvidia entered into a strategic partnership in November, with Anthropic adopting Nvidia’s technology architecture and receiving a $5 billion investment commitment from the chip designer.
