Blizzard Warning Issued for Latest York City, Long Island, and New Jersey
A blizzard warning has been issued for all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and much of New Jersey as a nor’easter threatens to bring heavy snow and strong winds to the region. The warning indicates expected snow accumulations between 13 and 18 inches, with wind gusts potentially reaching 55 mph. Whiteout conditions are anticipated, making travel life-threatening.
Rapid Shift in Forecast
The dramatic change in the forecast occurred overnight. Just yesterday morning, predictions indicated only around 3 inches of snow for the New York City area. Models that previously showed the storm tracking further offshore, such as the European model, have shifted, now indicating a path hugging the coastline. This aligns more closely with the American model, which had consistently predicted heavier snowfall.
Storm Development
The storm originates from an area of low pressure currently over California. This system will traverse the country and move off the North Carolina coast on Sunday. As it enters the Atlantic, the low will strengthen, bringing light to moderate snow and gusty northeast winds to the tri-state area beginning Sunday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is expected after sunset on Sunday and will continue into early Monday before tapering off.
Impacts and Safety
The blizzard conditions will significantly reduce visibility, potentially dropping below ¼ mile due to blowing snow. This creates dangerous whiteout conditions. Travel is strongly discouraged and may be life-threatening. Residents are advised to prepare for power outages and limited visibility.
Long Island City Considerations
Long Island City (LIC), a neighborhood in Queens, New York City, is included in the blizzard warning area. Long Island City is bordered by Astoria to the north, the East River to the west, Sunnyside to the east, and Newtown Creek to the south. Residents in LIC, particularly those in areas near the waterfront and in the Queensbridge Houses – the largest public housing complex in the Western Hemisphere – should take extra precautions.
