NYC Bomb Plot: ISIS-Inspired Attack Foiled Near Mayor Mamdani’s Residence
New York City authorities have thwarted a potential terror attack after two men allegedly attempted to detonate homemade explosive devices near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The suspects, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, both from Pennsylvania, reportedly acted under the inspiration of the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group.
The Attempted Attack
On Saturday, March 8, 2026, Balat and Kayumi allegedly threw two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during a clash between anti-Islam protesters, and counterprotesters. Neither device detonated as intended. A third device was later discovered in their vehicle and, while it did not contain explosive material, is being investigated in connection with the incident. The incident occurred during a protest organized by right-wing activist Jake Lang, which drew approximately 20 participants, and was significantly outnumbered by a counterprotest of around 125 people.
Suspects’ Allegations and Confessions
Following their arrest, both Balat and Kayumi allegedly made statements indicating their allegiance to ISIS. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Kayumi invoked “ISIS” as the reason for his actions during his arrest. Balat reportedly confessed to pledging allegiance to the extremist group and, when questioned about the scale of the attack, stated he wanted it to be “even bigger” than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and wounded hundreds. He reportedly expressed disappointment that the attack didn’t result in more casualties, stating, “It was only three deaths.”
The Explosive Devices
Preliminary analysis by the NYPD bomb squad revealed the devices were constructed using jars wrapped in black tape, containing bolts, screws, and a hobby fuse. One of the devices was found to contain TATP, a highly volatile and dangerous homemade explosive commonly used in IED attacks worldwide. Authorities emphasized that these were not hoax devices and were capable of causing serious injury or death.
Official Response and Investigation
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim mayor, confirmed that he and his wife were not at Gracie Mansion at the time of the attempted attack. He condemned the violence as “reprehensible” and affirmed the city’s commitment to safety and tolerance. James Barnacle, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York field office, praised the bravery of the NYPD officers who responded to the scene. Federal prosecutors have filed charges against Balat and Kayumi, including attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and using a weapon of mass destruction.
Heightened Security Measures
In response to the incident, New York City and State authorities have increased security measures. Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed over 1,000 members of the National Guard to protect critical transit sites, and state police are increasing their presence at sensitive locations. Authorities stated that New York City has been in a “heightened state of alert” since the start of hostilities in Iran.
Background of the Protest
The attempted attack occurred during a protest organized by right-wing influencer Jake Lang, titled “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City, Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer.” The protest was met by a larger counterprotest, “Drive the Nazis Out of New York.” Tensions escalated when a protester associated with Lang’s group pepper-sprayed counterprotesters.
