Increased NYPD Presence at Kings Plaza Mall Following TikTok Threat
Shoppers at Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Mall were met with a significantly increased NYPD security presence on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, following reports of a TikTok challenge that called for disruptive behavior. The heightened security measures came a day after a similar incident occurred at The Plaza Mall in the Bronx.
TikTok “Takeover” Challenge Prompts Police Response
A TikTok challenge, dubbed “takeover,” reportedly encouraged hundreds of teenagers to converge on the Kings Plaza Mall with the intent of causing chaos. Dozens of police officers were stationed at every entrance to the mall throughout the day. Security guards actively prevented groups of young people from entering the premises together, and officers patrolled inside the storefronts.
According to one NYPD officer, the increased presence served as a deterrent. “I don’t think anything is going to happen; we are here as a deterrent. They will witness us and walk the other way,” the officer told amNewYork.
Similar Incident at The Bronx Plaza Mall
The increased security at Kings Plaza followed a similar incident on February 16, 2026, at The Plaza Mall in the Bronx. Approximately 500 youths flooded the area, resulting in shattered glass windows and 18 arrests after the crowd reportedly pushed police officers.
“We are on top of it today. It is only after it is too late that someone says something. Someone could have been seriously hurt,” another officer stated to amNewYork.
Shopper Reactions to Increased Security
Shoppers expressed surprise at the visible police presence. Raven Blue, shopping with her niece, stated she had heard about the incident in the Bronx the previous day and felt safer with the increased security. “I feel better with the cops here, because these kids are out of control… You’ve got to have the cops because you don’t know what will happen next,” she said.
A tourist visiting from Florida reported witnessing an assault on a bus driver while riding the B9 bus to the mall. She described an incident where five teenagers harassed passengers and then struck the driver with a piece of ice before being confronted by 20 police officers.
A mall worker, Elena, voiced concern about the presence of young children in the mall, fearing they could grow caught up in any potential unrest. “It’s really bad. Especially because usually the cops are only here like two times a week,” she told amNewYork.
Public schools were closed for mid-winter recess during this period.
