Man Apprehended After River Escape Attempt in Huntington
Initial Domestic Disturbance and Flight
Huntington Police responded to a reported domestic incident on Oney Avenue on Thursday,initiating a sequence of events that culminated in a dramatic river rescue. The individual involved, identified as 31-year-old Kyle Huffman, evaded initial attempts at apprehension, fleeing the scene before officers could secure him. Following the incident, authorities secured warrants charging huffman with felony destruction of property and domestic battery.
Downtown Pursuit and Ohio River Entry
The following day, a Huntington Police officer located Huffman in the downtown area. A renewed attempt to take Huffman into custody triggered another flight, this time leading him to enter the Ohio River in the vicinity of Harris Riverfront Park. According to data from the National Weather Service, the Ohio River’s current in that area was approximately 2.5 mph on Friday, adding to the complexity of the situation.
Multi-Agency Rescue Operation
Recognizing the potential dangers, Huntington Police immediately requested assistance. The Huntington Fire department swiftly deployed its Search and Rescue team from the Guyandotte Boat Ramps.Troopers from the West Virginia State Police also joined the unfolding operation. In a precautionary measure,authorities extended the search perimeter,requesting support from Lawrence County 911 dispatch,the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office,and the chesapeake Police Department,anticipating the possibility that Huffman might be carried downstream across the state line.
Recovery and Custody
Huffman was observed swimming westward and was successfully recovered near 1st Street in huntington. He was then transported by boat back to the Guyandotte Boat Ramps where personnel from Cabell County EMS conducted a medical evaluation. After receiving medical clearance, Huffman was formally taken into custody and transported to the Western Regional Jail to await further legal proceedings.
