Ohio State Athletics Celebrates Landmark Year with National Accolades
The past year has been one of unprecedented success for Ohio State University’s athletic programs, culminating in significant national recognition.The men’s athletics program has been awarded the prestigious 2024-25 Capital One Cup, marking the first time in the university’s history – for both men’s and women’s programs – that it has claimed the top spot in this annual ranking of division I athletic excellence.
Capital One Cup Triumph & Investment in Student-Athletes
this achievement underscores a commitment to athletic prowess and academic dedication. Ohio State will receive $250,000 from Capital One,funds earmarked specifically for student-athlete scholarships. This investment will directly support the educational pursuits of the athletes who contributed to this remarkable victory.

A Broad Spectrum of Athletic Success
The buckeyes accumulated 113.5 points to secure the Capital One Cup, a tally derived from a combination of national championships and top-10 finishes in national polls. A diverse range of sports contributed to this notable score, demonstrating the breadth of athletic talent within the university. Key contributors included football, achieving a national championship; soccer, finishing third nationally; wrestling, securing a fifth-place ranking; and strong performances from fencing, tennis, gymnastics, and lacrosse, all placing within the top ten.
The final Capital One Cup standings saw a competitive field, with Penn State (82 points), Florida (81 points), Texas (66 points), and Cornell (64 points) rounding out the top five.

Directors’ Cup Ranking Further Solidifies athletic Prowess
Beyond the Capital One Cup,Ohio State’s overall athletic department also achieved significant acclaim,finishing eighth in the final LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Standings for the 2024-25 academic year. This ranking recognizes institutions that demonstrate comprehensive success across a wide array of NCAA sports.
Women’s Athletics Contribute to Overall Success
While the men’s program secured the Capital One Cup, the Ohio State women’s athletics programs also made considerable contributions to the department’s overall success, finishing 34th in the Capital One Cup standings.Ten women’s programs earned points toward the Directors’ Cup through NCAA championship appearances, including a second-place finish in hockey, ninth-place finishes in soccer and tennis, and strong showings in swimming and diving, basketball, softball, gymnastics, track and field, golf, and cross country.The success wasn’t limited to one gender; eight men’s sports also contributed to the Directors’ Cup points total, mirroring the diversity of achievement seen in the Capital One Cup rankings. This holistic success underscores Ohio State’s commitment to fostering a thriving athletic surroundings for all its student-athletes.
