OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Omaha Fire Department says a firefighter has died after a battle with cancer.
A social media post from the Omaha Professional Fire Fighters Association sent Friday also says Fire Captain John Olson, a 22-year veteran of the department, had died.
The Association says Olson “…served the citizens of Omaha with courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public safety.”
Olson is survived by his wife and their three children. He was 50 years old.
Captain Olson dedicated more than two decades of service to the Omaha Fire Department and to the citizens of Omaha. He began his career on January 5, 2004, and was promoted to Captain in 2012. Throughout his time with OFD, he served in numerous assignments across the department, including Engine 23 and Special Operations, before most recently serving as a Fire Inspector in the Fire Prevention Division.
A GoFundMe was set up in November 2024 to support Olson’s fight against colon cancer, which had metastasized to his liver.
Funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office also shared their condolences online.
