Orlando Festival, Art and Cinema

Bergamo- We live displacing times that force us to ask ourselves about our positioning, to take a word and to be there. It is from this need that Orlando Festival Back, for the twelfth edition, with an increasingly decisive step.

This year we choose to investigate the open field of bankruptcy. If success is the outcome of a system of rigid rules that does not take into account the plurality of perspectives, identities, bodies, possibilities and solutions others to live in the world, “it may then be that the bankruptcy, after all, is simpler and offers another type of reward” (J. Halberstam).

Although it is accompanied by a spectrum of not pleasant emotions, it also means having experience of the flaws of a system that demands a single type of success. We wonder if the fouls are not the fertile space where new possibilities of making world are discussed.

Festival Orlando 2025 therefore invites you to watch where success does not want to look: to observe what is hidden under the carpet, to face the elephant in the room that can be revealed Giraffa, as in the image of the photographer Martin Kollar that we have chosen to represent this edition.

The program we prepared combines, on the one hand, the outcome of artistic projects that allowed us to arrive close to contexts and people that we would not have known otherwise and, on the other, shows and performances of national and international artists who claim the margin as a wider observation point.

Thanks to them we want to become aware of the fact that, as Virginia Woolf said, it is always better to be Chius* outside than to be Chius* inside a system that is only the benefit of a few people. Rather than at the podium of the best, we prefer to tend to the horizon of plurality where there is a place for all because, in fact, “in failing, we are always in company” (J. Halberstam).

In these times, we observe the world and we see that we have been wrong, but not everything, and therefore we want to train to use a grammar of the possibility to express the fundamental desire to live life otherwise.

My journey with the Orlando film scene began with a casual visit to the Florida film Festival a few years ago. I was initially drawn in by the promise of seeing independent films and escaping the usual summer blockbusters. What I didn’t expect was how deeply the experience would resonate with me.

The first film I watched was a short documentary about a local artist struggling to make ends meet.It was raw, honest, and incredibly moving. After the screening, the director and the artist were there for a Q&A. Hearing their stories and the passion behind their work was inspiring.

That experience sparked a passion for independent cinema and a desire to support local filmmakers.
