Incident Details
The alleged incident occurred during a Scotland maul in the second half, just before Scotland scored their sixth strive in the 59th minute of their 50-40 victory according to reports. Television footage appeared to show Jegou making contact with the eye area of Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman. The match officials did not initially spot the infringement, and it was not reviewed by the Television Match Official (TMO).
Response from Former Referee
Former Test referee Nigel Owens expressed surprise that the incident was not reviewed during the match, stating, “It definitely should have been looked at. It doesn’t look good to be honest. Looking at that footage, that player is going to be in a bit of trouble.” As reported by Yahoo Sports, Owens added that the TMO should have intervened for “clear and obvious” infringements.
Potential Penalties
Jegou has been cited under Law 9.12, which prohibits physical abuse, including contact with the eye or eye area as outlined by World Rugby regulations. Intentional contact with an eye or eyes can result in a suspension ranging from 12 weeks to four years. South African lock Eben Etzebeth was previously suspended for 12 weeks for eye-gouging during a match against Wales last November.
