Pat McAfee Addresses WWE Future, Doesn’t Rule Out Return But Feels “Passed By”
Pat McAfee has addressed speculation about a potential return to WWE, indicating that while he doesn’t completely dismiss the possibility, he currently feels the company has moved forward without him. McAfee shared his thoughts during an Instagram Live session on Sunday night, responding to a fan question about rejoining WWE television [Instagram].
Burnout and Previous Departure
McAfee stepped away from his regular WWE commentary role in June 2025, citing burnout and mental exhaustion stemming from a demanding media schedule. Despite a brief appearance at WWE WrestlePalooza in Indianapolis in September 2025, he hasn’t resumed a full-time role.
“Feels Like That Business Has Kind of Passed Me By”
When asked directly about a return, McAfee stated, “Right now it does not feel like it is something that’s supposed to happen. Feels like that business has kind of passed me by a little bit.” He expressed gratitude for his time with the company and the opportunity to work alongside commentator Michael Cole, whom he described as the “GOAT.” [Instagram]
Current Career Focus
McAfee continues to host The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN and serves as an analyst on ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast. He previously competed in the ring, facing WWE stars like Gunther, Austin Theory, and The Miz during his time with the company.
Future Possibilities
While McAfee doesn’t foresee an immediate return, he didn’t entirely close the door on the possibility, stating, “I don’t think you ever say never, especially with WWE.” [Sports Illustrated]
