Abdeslam Ouaddou Seeks to Sharpen Orlando Pirates’ Attacking Edge
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is focused on improving his team’s finishing ability following recent setbacks. The Buccaneers suffered consecutive defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns and Casric Stars in the Betway Premiership and Nedbank Cup, respectively, exposing a lack of clinical edge in front of goal. Ouaddou, who has already secured the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup titles with the club this season, is implementing strategies to instill a “killer instinct” in his players.
Addressing the Goalscoring Deficiency
Ouaddou attributes the recent struggles to a mental block and a lack of decisiveness in the final third. He believes developing a predatory mindset is crucial for success. “Instilling this killer instinct is not easy, because it comes from the mind,” Ouaddou explained. “If I have to use a metaphor or an image – you have to be hungry in front of goal.”
A Phased Approach to Improvement
The Moroccan coach outlined a multi-faceted approach to enhance his players’ goalscoring prowess. This includes:
- Individual Work: Focused one-on-one sessions to address specific weaknesses and build confidence.
- Decision-Making Drills: Exercises designed to minimize hesitation and improve the speed of thought in attacking situations.
- Progressive Pressure: Gradually increasing the intensity of training scenarios to simulate match conditions, starting with low-pressure environments and building towards high-stakes simulations.
- Video Analysis: Utilizing visual aids to demonstrate optimal body positioning, footwork, and shot selection.
Patience and Confidence Building
Ouaddou emphasized the importance of patience, particularly when working with younger players. He believes building confidence is paramount. “If you put an adversary on him [the player] too quickly, he will not gain this confidence,” he stated. “Little by little, when he begins to acquire it, you have to add pressure in the exercises, bring more opponents and pressure to aid him.”
Preparing for the Soweto Derby
Pirates will return to league action with a highly anticipated clash against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday, February 28. Ouaddou will be hoping his players can translate their training improvements into a positive result against their arch-rivals.
