Paris, France – September 22, 2025 – Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain has been crowned the winner of the 2024/25 Golden Ball, marking a career highlight for the French international. The awards ceremony, held tonight in Paris, also celebrated Aitana Bonmatí as the best female footballer, and recognized outstanding achievements across the sport.
Dembélé topped a strong field,finishing ahead of Barcelona’s young sensation,Lamine Yamal,and his PSG teammate,Vitinha. The top ten also included established stars like Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Raphinha (Barcelona), Achraf hakimi (PSG), Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG), and Nuno Mendes (PSG).

The ceremony also saw the inaugural awarding of several new prizes. Vicky Lopez of Barcelona was recognized as the best young football player, receiving the Raymond Kopa Trophy (previously known as the Raymond Prize). Hannah Hampton of Chelsea was awarded the best goalkeeper award, the Lev Yashin Trophy.
In the women’s game, Ewa Pajor of Barcelona received the Gerd Müller Award for the best female goalscorer. Aitana Bonmatí was named the best female player, continuing her extraordinary run of form.
Coaching Honours and Team Success
Luis Enrique and Sarina Wiegman were jointly awarded the title of best coaches, recognizing thier success leading their respective teams. paris Saint-germain was named the best male team of the season, while Arsenal FC took the honours for the best women’s team.
The Socrates Award, recognizing dedication to society and the promotion of a fairer and inclusive world, was presented to the Xana Foundation.
Past Context of the Golden Ball
The Ballon d’Or,originally open only to European players from its inception in 1956 until 1994,has evolved to include players of all nationalities since 1995. From 2010 to 2015, a partnership with FIFA resulted in the FIFA Ballon d’Or. Currently, the FIFA Best player award and the ballon d’Or are presented independently.
Slovak football fans will fondly remember 1976 as a notably successful year, with Anton Ondruš finishing 6th, Marián Masný 9th, and Jaroslav Pollak 15th – the only time Slovaks achieved three top-15 finishes in the same year. Ján Pivarník achieved a respectable 22nd place finish in a previous year.
