Popular Diabetes and Weight-Loss Drugs to Witness Price Cuts in 2027
Some of the most popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs in the U.S. Will soon be more affordable. The lower prices will take effect January 1, 2027, coinciding with reduced prices under Medicare plans for older adults.
Price Reductions for Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of these medications, announced that Ozempic and Wegovy will each cost approximately $675 per month. This represents a 35% decrease for Ozempic and a 50% reduction for Wegovy. The price cuts will similarly apply to Wegovy pills and Rybelsus, another diabetes medication, across all dosages.
Factors Driving Price Changes
Novo Nordisk stated that the price reductions align with its commitment to increasing access to GLP-1 medications as competition in the market grows. The increasing number of individuals purchasing these drugs without insurance has also heightened the importance of pricing considerations.
Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program
These price reductions are a result of the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program, established by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. This program allows Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for certain medications, a practice previously prohibited for 20 years. In November 2025, Medicare announced negotiated lower prices for 15 drugs, with these changes taking effect in 2027 .
Broader Impact of GLP-1 Coverage
Currently, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound can cost individuals between $900 and $1,300 per month without insurance coverage . Medicare and Medicaid coverage for these drugs will begin in 2026 through a pilot program, further expanding access for beneficiaries.
Previous Efforts to Lower Drug Costs
The Trump administration previously announced drug price reductions through executive orders and negotiations with pharmaceutical companies. However, a deal negotiated by the Trump administration with Novo Nordisk resulted in a $250 price tag for Ozempic and Wegovy, which is lower than the current negotiated price of $274 .
